Progress United II 1 : 0 Landsdowne Rangers

Landsdowne Rangers, on a winning streak that has seen them climb up the league, arrived with high hopes of securing a third win of the season.

The match went ahead after a late pitch inspection and both sides went about the task of claiming the three points.

However, few chances were created in an uneventful first half and Landsdowne - increasingly frustrated by poor decisions from the home team's assistant referee - went behind on the half hour.

Their defence was caught deep in their own box allowing the Progress striker to squeeze the ball past the despairing dive of Mark Potts.

The second half saw Landsdowne increase the pressure on the home team as Rix, Bell and Bush all came close.

The referee then came under pressure after 60 minutes when the Progress keeper looked to have brought down Tony Bush in the box, ignoring the appeals of the visitors and waving play on.

With twenty minutes to go a Landsdowne player did get on the score-sheet, unfortunately for Jason Cadell his attempted clearance went straight into his own goal.

It mattered little as Hart and Bell spurned late opportunities to salvage something out of the game and Landsdowne lost by two goals to nil.

Under fire manager Pete Smart has not had the best of weeks - discontent at training culminating in his no show for today's game has seen his position at the club come under increasing pressure.

However, on a brighter note all the players and staff would like to offer their congratulations to the England Rugby World Cup winning squad on a fantastic triumph down under and bringing back a bit of pride to our sporting nation.

Well done boys.
