After winning a hard fought fixture against Essex Royals, Landsdowne were having a week off from the league; this weeks opponents were Shepley United in the Essex Junior Cup. Both teams had met on two previous occasions; last season resulting in a win for Landsdowne and on the second occasion a pre season win for Shepley. Today Landsdowne were looking to take revenge……
The game began at a fast pace with Landsdowne having the best of the possession in the early stages. Both teams were looking to attack but the away side were keeping the ball and playing some good football, however they couldn’t take their chances and the score remained 0-0 for the first twenty minutes.
Goal: 1-0. (Dean Weaving) - after a succession of corners Dan Trevarthen knocked in a fast low corner which was met by the in form Dean Weaving. Deano hit the ball goalwards and into the net, although some said the ball struck Stuarts bottom, he kindly denied the rumour and the goal was awarded to Mr. Weaving.
The rest of the halve was pretty much all Landsdowne as they continued to dominate play with some quick passing. Shepley were struggling to keep up with the pace and even when they had the ball they could do little with it. This was not to say they were playing badly but Landsdowne were playing well and creating some good chances. Shortly after the first, it was 2-0.
Goal 2-0: (Dan Trevarthen) - after some great link up play down the right from Deano and Dan the ball was passed quickly into the box. Nick was playing well up front and after receiving the ball on the edge he unselfishly passed to Dan who coolly slotted the ball passed the Shepley goalkeeper.
Goal 3-0: (Nick Wallace) - after some good defending Dave Rix passed the ball up top to Stuart, with his back to goal he cleverly flicked the ball passed his marker and into the path of Yard who was joining the attack along the right flank. After taking a touch he looked up and crossed the ball low into the box behind the Shepley defence and with the simplest of finished it was slotted home by Nick for his first goal of the season.
3-0 at half time and it was looking to be a comfortable result. The message from the manager was more of the same. Having picked up an injury late in the first half, James Greave was struggling so Landsdowne started the second half with 10 men. This didn’t change much as the home team struggled to take advantage and it was pretty much a repeat of the second half but without the goals. Having had a rest James returned to the action, shortly after he won a penalty. Landsdowne tradition is if you make it, you take it……
Goal 4-0: (James Greave) - James would admit it was not the best penalty, however he was happy all the same and it was well deserved.
With the result now in no doubt both teams began to relax, this probably a reason for the consolation goal. Although it was a great finish from the Shepley midfielder; an overhead kick leaving Ben with no chance.
Overall Summary:
A comfortable victory for Landsdowne and a good performance. For the third time this season Dan T easily won the Man of the Match award with a master class display in the centre of midfield. Well done Dan and Job done for the boys.
